It's Cool To Be Kind!

For today's SLJ task, we learnt about being kind, and that it's cool to be kind. Our first step or activity for this task, was to play a little game It’s Cool to Be Kind. Which is a game all about spending kindness to others and blocking the bully. Personally, I found this game quite fun!

Our next step was to screenshot a nice comment (and our reply) from our blog and place it onto a Google Drawing, provided on the SLJ website. Our last step was to embed the Google Drawing a PNG and post it to our blogs.

So, without further to do here is my kind comment..

Do you think the comment and my reply were nice, and kind? Tell me in the comments below, I'll reply as soon as possible!

I hope you all enjoy the rest of the Summer holidays!

Building a Dam!

Today the Summer Learning Journey challenged us (SLJ participators) to create a dam, out of natural resources. I made my mine in a aluminium foil baking tray, because their isn't a lot of running water at the moment. While making our dams, we were asked to take pictures of the steps, progress and final result (if we could). Here is how I made my dam...

First off all, I started by folding up the edges of the tray to make more of a container. Like this..
In the photo above you can see the tray before I folded the edges.
And in this photo above you can see the tray after I had folded up the edges.
From there, I placed a layer of dirt in a straight line right across the centre of my tray. Then I added sticks and bark to support the centre of the dam wall. Like this,
After that, I used another layer of dirt to cover up the sticks, followed by a layer of ferns. I used the ferns as I thought that they could mesh it together with their shape.
And once again, covered the ferns up with dirt. Here is what my dam looked like, before I added water.
Afterwards, as my final step, I added water to one side of the container, to test if the dam wall in the middle blocked the water from seeking though to the other side.
After pouring the water into one side, I left my dam sit there for around ten minutes. As I watched I saw that water was starting to flow into the other side of the dam. I think in conclusion it worked quite well, and it kept a lot of water from flowing to the other side.
Although, next time if I made my dam again, I would make my dam wall a curved shape, and not just a straight wall, this is because the curve usually used in huge dams around the world like this one...
Kariba | Zimbabwe | Britannica
makes the structure stronger, and harder for the water to burst the dam wall. Next time, I would also use thick mud or clay, because when I placed the dirt, the surface of my tray was flat, so there were little gaps between the dirt and the tray.

Have you ever built a dam at the river, creek, or at home?

Here is my Would You Rather...

So, what would you rather?

Earths Structure

For the past couple of days our learning has been focused around Volcanoes, Mountains and the Earths structure. Learning about the earths structure helps with the understanding of how Volcanoes erupt and how mountains form and change shape over time. My reading group were the assigned the task of creating a diagram (on Google Drawings) with the earth's layers and a few sentences explaining a bit about the layers. Here is my diagram of the Earths layers...

5 Reasons Why...

The other day in class, Mrs Bennett introduced a new type of writing, called '5 reasons why'. Basically, you write 5 things about why you think (for example) 'Spring is the best Season'.
We did this writing because recently we have been focusing on Persuasive Writing. We were trying to convince my readers that Matawai School is the best school.
Here is my writing....

Aurora Leadership Program

Today, the 4th of June 2020, I participated in the Aurora Leadership Program. This is a program that improves skills of Leadership.  Each school gets to choose 1-2 students to participate. Matawai School chose Isabel (https://matawaiisabelr.blogspot.com/2020/) and I. Because of the Corona Virus we couldn't meet together so we used 'Google Meet' to learn together over a video call. We used 'Burn Bright' as part of our learning, we had to complete two modules. The first one was about Leadership and the second one was about Teamwork. We also decorated our very own set of slides called a learning passport. We used this slide to reflect on the modules we had done earlier. I really enjoyed the day and I learnt more about Leadership. We will be travelling to Gisborne soon for another workshop. But, except for the next one we will be meeting in person.

Enviro Project

Rm 4, Matawai School (My class room) is working on redeveloping our local BMX track is our big environment project for 2020. Our school is a green and gold enviro school, so we do little and BIG environment projects here and there. It is going to take a lot of work to redevelop but we can do it. We have got permission from our board of trustees and they think it's a good idea to continue. Our first step is putting cattle from a local farmer into the paddock to get the grass down.
I will try to update you with photos and information when we have done some more work on this project. Do you have a local bike track near you????

Introducing Me!

Kia Ora,

My name is Hayley and I am a year 7 at Matawai School. I live with my family of 4 on a small farm or lifestyle block with many animals and a huge garden. My family is originally from Victoria, Australia. My grandparents live near by and I spend a lot of time with them too.

In school I like to silently read and write poems. My favourite authors are Roald Dahl, David William or Micheal Morpurgo. I also really like sports and running. I hope to get better at math this year. I like to sing and play the Ukulele.

Some of my hobbies are . . . art, photography, looking after animals and little kids. In the future I would like to become a paramedic or an event/professional  photographer. I am looking forward to the year 2020!

I hope you enjoy reading my future blog posts,

Underwater Robots???

The Summer Learning Journey has challenged me to watch a video about  students in Nelson that navigate there Aquabots in and around a swimming pool collecting things. After we had watched the video we had to create a blog post saying whether we would like to have Aquabots at our school. Here is what I think about them . . . I think it would be quite cool to have Aquabots at our school because our school has a big swimming pool and we sometimes take part in creating, coding and driving robots. We go to a place in Gisborne called Mind Lab (which they have now changed there name, but I can't quite remember it). Anyway, they teach you how to do coding etc. Last time they were there we got to have a go at VR (virtual reality) head set, it was so cool!!! We chose a game we wanted to play, I chose a big roller coaster/water slide game. Have you ever tried VR??? Would you like Aquabots???

Websites

The Summer Learning Programme challenged me to list my 4 favourite learning sites either presenting them on a poster or presentation.
I chose to do my using a presentation, here it is . . .Just in case you were wondering what each website is about, I will explain . . .
MoneyTime - Is a website that teaches you about money, for more information check out a blog post I did a while ago: https://matawaihayleyd.blogspot.com/search?q=MoneyTime
Maths Buddy - Is a website where you have an account and you do quizzes on any type of maths. If you get more than 3 answers wrong you have to redo the quiz.
Prototec - Is a website where you can practise basic facts at any level.
Hit The Button - Is a website where you can practise times tables. You are given a question and there are a series of buttons with wrong and right answers, you have to tap on the button you think is the correct answer for the times table question.
Those are my 4 favourite website that help me with maths learning in class and at home. Do you have any favourite websites???

NAIDOC

Dr Jessica Rogers is a Aboriginal Australian. She is also a leader in indigenous education. She grew up in Queensland, Australia. When when she had a baby while she was still at high school, it seemed like her education and grade would suffer badly. However, Jessa not only completed her high school education, but after that she went to University and completed several degrees, including a PhD which means that instead she is now called Dr Rogers!
Dr Jessa Rogers became the first school principal and youngest Aboriginal principal in Australia.  At a school in far north Queensland for young indigenous mums and their babies like her. For her work on improving indigenous education in Australia, she won the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award in 2010, has gone on to win many more awards and write several novels and books.
The Summer Learning Journey programme has asked us, as on one of our tasks to calculate how old she was when she was awarded the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award. We where given the date of when she was born and the date of when she was awarded the award.
Birth date - 7th April 1985
Awarded the NAIDOC - 9th July 2010
Here's how I worked out how old she was. . .
I started with 1985 and added 15 to make it the year 2000, after that I added the 10 to make it to 201 my answer was 25 years old. In the end my final answer was . . .
25 years, 3 months, and 2 days.
