Kiwi Jingle Bells

For today's activity I chose to start off by completing a task called, Kiwi Jingle Bells. Our first instruction with this task was to watch a small video of a singer's interpretation of Jingle Bells, but Kiwi edition! Then we had the task of creating our own! So, I have been busily creating my version of the song. Then if we could we were asked to sing our songs by our selves or with a friend or family member, and this family member is, "drum roll please" my Mother! Here is my song...

Apologies for the laughing and terrible, singing!

Let's Go On A Treasure Hunt w/ The SLJ

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we got to learn how to encrypt and decrypt Pigpen coding. Now, you may be think "What in the world in Pigpen coding? A pig stuck in a pen and you have to code the pig to get it out?" Well, if you guess was anything like that, I hate to tell you but... your incorrect! Pigpen coding looks like this...
And I am sorry if this picture made it look even more confusing! But, I promise I got the hang of the Pigpen coding pretty quick, and I am sure you will too, if you try it! It's a little hard to explain, but I will try my best, here goes...

Here's how Pigpen Code Works -
Pigpen cipher is a code system and is made up of 4 main grids. The first grid is like a naughts and crosses grid, made up of 9 boxes. In each of the 9 squares there are 9 letters, one filling each box. In the first box, the letters go from A to I, just like this one...

Then you take the sides of the box that the letters are in. So the letters A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H and I will look something like this if they are translated into Pigpen code...

Anyways, for the next 9 letters in the alphabet you will need to do the same, draw a naughts and crosses box and fill in each box with a letter this time the letters in the box should be, J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R and should look like this...
But, instead of doing the exact same thing as last time you are going to add a small dot in the corner, translated into Pigpen code it should look like this...

Now, we have covered 18 letters of the alphabet and we have 8 to go, here is where the system changes again. Instead of a 3x3 box, you need to draw a big ( X ) like the one below.
After you have drawn your ( X ) take the next 4 letters of the alphabet (S,T,U,V) and add them to the X, like this...
From here, it's like the first grid again, where you need to take the sides of box that the letter is in, meaning it should look like this...

Then, finally for the last 4 letters it like the one we just did with the ( X ) however we add dots, so it should look something like this...

So, in conclusion the Pigpen alphabet should look like this...

After, finding out how Pigpen coding works, we were instructed to complete and fill out a deck of slides. Here is my completed copy of the Pigpen coding slides...

HINT- The beach is located in the North Island, the initials are AB

Tell me your guess in the comment section and I'll tell you if your correct or incorrect!
Maybe you will even make me one to solve?
I hope you enjoyed my blog post! This one was super fun, tricky, but I learnt lots of new things!

My Hana Kōkō Design

Today I decided to complete another Summer Learning task, this time the task was about creating our very own Hana Kōkō outfit designs. Hana Kōkō is the Maori Santa. Firstly, we started by reading a small story from a School journal, from there our instructions for the creating side of the task were, to open a new Google Drawing or to use the template below. Then we were instructed to make our own outfit for Santa, based on our surroundings and where we live. I have made a short video for you below and also embedded the Google Drawing. I had a BLAST making this and I hope you enjoy!

(I was having some problems with embedding my video, however if you tap HERE it will take you to my video on a separate tab)

Summer Haiku

Today, I chose to complete a quick writing task from the Summer Learning Journey, all about writing poems! But not just any poems, Haiku's! A Haiku, incase your unsure, is a poem constructed of 3 lines, the first line has 5 syllables, followed by the middle line which includes 7 syllables and the last line once again made of 5 syllables. I have written a few Haiku's before at school, have you ever written a Haiku? However, the poem couldn't just be about anything, we had to write them around, Summer! Have you been enjoying your Summer?

When I think of Summer I think of LOTS of things, but I'm not going to list them because when if I started I wouldn't be able to stop, although, 1 of the main things I think of is the river or going to the beach. So, I decided to write mine about the beach. Here is my Summer Haiku, (well I wrote a few, not just one!) Here they are...

(Sorry, in the image above I have made a small spelling error and I don't have the original to change it, 'shells' is supposed to be 'shell', thanks!)

I hope you like my Summer Haiku's! Enjoy the rest of your Summer holidays and be safe! What do you like to do the most in the holidays?

Rise Up!

Recently, the Summer Learning Journey featured a task called 'Rise Up'. For this activity we had to write our very own song chorus. We started off by listening to an incredible song written and performed by Mangere Collage students 'We Will Rise'. If you would like to listen to their song you can take a look here.

For my song, I wanted to include all off my School values in my song, so without further to do, here is my song! (If you wondering my school values are Excellence, Perseverance, Community and Respect. This song chorus took a quite a long time to create, and I hope you like it!

One more hing before you read it though, the bold words is the main parts of the chorus and the faded (not bold) words are the echo's. Here it is!

I hope you all enjoyed my blog post, can't wait for the next task!

(Part 2 - A few days later, after posting this)

Today, I finally got enough courage to post the video of me singing my song lyrics. I like singing (even though I am not good at it at ALL) but this style of singing I am not great at! Singing is not my passion or strength, but I gave it ago anyways, and I am not offended if you don't like it! Tell the truth! Do you like singing, leave you answer in the comments below, I will reply as soon as I see it! Anyways, here it is...

Optical Illusions

Today, I decided to try the Optical illusions task from the Summer Learning Journey. To start off with I thought that this task would be pretty simple and easy, however after I started drawing my illusion I found that it was a lot harder than it seemed! But, I tried my best and this is how my optical illusion turned out...

Is this tree projecting in or out?
I made quite a few mistakes, which doesn't make the illusion as quite effective as it could have been.

There are 3 main types of Illusions, physical illusions, cognitive illusions and literal illusions.

Now, to explain what an optical illusion is, an Optical Illusion is something that deceives the eye that appears to be something else. Another explanation for an Optical Illusion is, a experience of seeming to see something which does not exist.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog post! Once again sorry if the instructions aren't very clear, I can't wait for the next post! Have you ever drawn an Optical Illusion?

Te Reo Maori - What Are You Doing Today?

Another task from the Summer Learning Journey that I chose to complete today was 'What are You Doing Today?' For this task we were provided with a Google Slide that had small activities on each slide, to help us understand the words, what are you doing today? in Te Reo Maori. Firstly, we had listen to a quick clip then arrange the words to make the sentence, and so on... Here is the slide, so that you can look at my work...

And here is my Step It Up work...
We had to draw a picture relating to the work above, what's your favourite thing to do at the playground?

Which One Doesn't Belong!?

Another activity from the SLJ that I chose to complete today, was called 'Which One Doesn't Belong'. To start we were given a set of slides, on each slide there was 4 photos, from there we had to list all of our reasons why we believed they didn't belong with the others. (sorry for my terrible explaining!)

For example...

This plate of 4 donuts, they're all different, meaning we had to write our reason why they didn't belong...

- D (bottom left) is the only doughnut that has pink frosting or the only doughnut with sprinkles

Another one could be...

- C (bottom left) is the only doughnut with nuts

or A (top left) is the only doughnut with no frosting and so on...

What doughnut would you like to eat the most?

Here is my reasons why these pictures below in the set of slides don't belong...

Do you agree with me, could you add any on top of mine?

Here is one for you...
(write your reasons in the comments)
I hope you enjoyed! Can't wait for the next task! This task was a BLAST!

Tānerore!

Today I attempted and completed another Summer Learning Journey task, this time learning about Tānerore, Kowhaiwhai, and other Maori patterns.

Now, if you wondering who Tānerore is, I made a Google Drawing and wrote in my own words, my understanding of him.

After learning about Tānerore, I started to create draw Kowhaiwhai. We had the option to either use a template provided or to draw our own on paper. I chose to sketch mine on paper. Afterwards we played around with a koru design rotating and reflecting the shapes to created we a repetitive pattern across the page.

Then I was onto the Step It Up activity, where we did a similar thing but making our own shapes and designs to make a banner. In my drawings I used Koru (new life, growth, strength and peace), and the Mangopare, (hammerhead shark) I also chose to colour my designs!

I really enjoyed drawing these patterns, however I found some of them a little hard to draw! I made some mistakes along the way however, I'm pretty proud of my efforts!
Anyways, here are my drawings...

My kick start activity drawing...

And my Step It Up drawing...

Design #1

What pattern is your favourite?
(I apologise if my instructions aren't very clear!)
I can't wait for the next SLJ task!

False Teeth Over Board!

Recently, the Summer Learning Journey featured the task of creating our own comic pages. Firstly, we watched a short film called Teeth, from there we had to create a comic page and fill in text boxes from scenes in the clip. We were provided a free template that we could make our comic page on, or had the option to make our own from scratch our use a comic making platform (website). Without further to do, here is my comic...
I had fun creating this, and I hope you like it! I can't wait for the next SLJ task!

Incredible Insects

 December 15th 2020 - Summer Learning Journey - Task 2

Today the Summer Learning Journey challenged us to create a piece of art work using nature around us, the artwork was inspired by Raku Inoue, a Japanese artist who only uses leaves, barks, flowers and other things found from his backyard to create spectacular artwork like these...

If you would like to look at more art by Raku, this website has hundreds of cool photos!

To make the insect in photo 1 I used, a Chestnut seed casing (for the body), 8 small twigs (for the legs), and 2 thorns from a rose bush (for the fangs).

And to make the insect in photo 2  I used, a Lavender (for the body), green/unripe blackcurrants(for the eyes), ferns (for the antennae), 6 sticks (for the legs) and Zinnia petals (as wings).

Here are the final results!
Photo #1 (above)

Photo #2 (above)

I also made some more insects, however this time I chose to make some butterflies. To make the butterflies I used petals from flowers, the pistil, stigma, style and ovary (the middle of the flower). The types of flowers I used were... Nasturtium, Pansy, Alyssum, Chickory, Shirley Poppies, Marigold, and Salvia. Here are the butterflies I made...

YOUR Comments Count!

Today marks the start of the Summer Learning Journey for 2020-2021. To begin, I decided to complete one of the activities for week 1, 'Your Comments Count'. We started off by carefully choosing another students blog post, I chose a blog post written by Tumanaako @ Glen Innes school as I saw that they had made a catapult. I chose this blog post, not only because it sounded interesting, but I have created a catapult using marshmallows and skewers and wanted to see how they had created theirs.

This is my comment to Tumanaako...

Today from this task I learnt to include more, positivity, thoughtfulness and helpfulness. Along with double checking my work, making a connection if possible, including a greeting, sharing experiences/facts and information, and adding more punctuation. I can't wait to complete another SLJ task!

Would You Rather...

This morning my class started of the by completing a quick writing task. We had to... Create 'Would You Rathers!' I wrote 12 in total, after writing them we had to chose a favourite and share it with the class and publish it to our blogs! We did this writing so that we could start a good discussion in the class. Here is my Would You Rather...

So, what would you rather?

Google Search Fun!!

Today in class, we were learning how to use the Microphone on Google to search "how to say Merry Christmas is Spanish" (for example). We made a set of Google Slides then wrote down 5 different ways of writing Merry Christmas. I chose to do the 5 languages, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, French, and Turkish.

After we wrote down our 5 languages we moved onto the next task which was the 'Google Search fun' we had to search (say to the microphone) after searching them we then took a screenshot and placed it onto your slides.

- Matawai School, the weather, what town Richie McCaw was born in, How to say Cucumber is Spanish, What commotion means, and finally, what is 500 x 39?

Here is my set of slides...

Summer Learning Journal Trial

The next step, for trialing the Summer Learning Journey is to 'Step it Up' basically we take another drawing from Art Colouring Book and examine the textures, designs, colours, patterns, lines etc. Here is the picture I chose to examine...

I noticed that there are dots, lines, curves, textures, shapes, frilly edges and colours (peach, coral, blues :light blue, dark blue, forest blue: whites, greys and creams.)

(In case your wondering what the Summer Learning Journey is... it's a programme that runs over the Summer Holidays, the Manaiakalani. Programme sets tasks for you to complete. However you don't have to complete every task set for you, it's completely optional! Last year I tried the Summer Learning Journey and loved it, I also almost completed 100 blog posts over December and January.)

Do you think you would ever try the Summer Learning Journey?

Roses by Vincent Van Gogh

Today my class experimented using Art Colouring Book, a website were you can choose an image to colour in (I chose a pot of roses). We found this website of the Summer Learning Journey 2020-2021 example. Here is my colouring, next to the original...
(Picture above: Roses created by Vincent van Gogh in 1890)
Colouring (on the left) by Hayley
Original Colouring and image (on the right) by Vincent van Gogh

I chose and decided to change the colour of the background to a dark blue so that the purple, yellow and pink roses stood out. I also chose to make the flowers brighter to make the image more vibrant, interesting and 'summery'.

Rural Athletics Day 2020!

Last week was full of fun and action, with the Matawai School Ag Day (pet’s day) and the Rural Athletics Day. Meaning, that we only had 3 days of learning in the classrooms and the last 2 days of the week (Thursday and Friday) away at events. Both days were really fun, however I think (despite all of the cute animals) Athletics day was my favourite.

When we arrived at the Rural Athletics, we meet up with all of the teachers and classmates. Then we went and practised some of the activities (high jump, long jump, shot put, running and discus) however I only practised high jump and long jump before the races. Afterwards, we were called together to sit in our age groups and listen up for the start of the day.

The lady in charge called everyone to there places and the day had begun. Firstly, the Yr 7’s where called to do high jump, which I really enjoyed! I had only ever jumped 1m 10cm however on the day I managed to jump 1m 25cm! Which I was really proud of! My friend Jaimee managed to jump 1m 27cm and she won first place by only 2cm, so I came second. So the 3 Matawai girls came 1st, 2nd, 3rd! (Jaimee 1st, Me/Hayley 2nd and Rylee 3rd)

Next, we rotated around the field to shot put. However, my 2 chances were throws, so I didn’t place! But, my strongest point isn’t shot put or discus, my strengths are running and long jump, so I just had to remind myself that I can’t be good at everything.

After waiting, for the other Yr 7 girls and boys we rotated onto long jump. Abby (a girl from another school went first,) followed by Rylee (my friend from Matawai) Jaimee (another on of my friends) myself, and then 3 other Yr 7 girls. On my first jump I jumped 3m 42cm  and on my 2nd go I jumped 3m, 64cm, so the second time I jumped 20cm more.

Rotating around the field after that we moved onto discus, which was really clogged up and we had to wait 45 MINUTES!! And it was around lunchtime/mid day, so it was really hot and there was hardly any shade. And before was came to the discus the Yr 8’s had been waiting and they had been waiting almost an 1 hour. So, when it was finally our turn, I threw a total of 11m, 34cm. Which I was pretty proud of considering that discus and shot put aren’t my strong point.

Finally the field events were over and it was lunch time, so after I ate my lunch my amazing friend Rylee brought me a Juicy ice block. After that however, we had the track and relay races. So, we lined back up in our age groups and waited for the start of the runners. First event was the 60m sprint. We lined up and GO!! I ran as fast as I could go, and came first!! Next was the 200m (running once around the oval) and once again came first.

Then the last running race was the 600m (running 3 times around the oval) and once again came first! I was super proud of myself.

Lastly, we were onto the last part of the day which was the relay races. I was the first relay runner, followed by Blake, Liana and Charlie (kids in my class) And surprise!! We came first once again! I was really proud of my relay runner group and we did really good!

Overall, I had a great day and can’t wait for next years Athletics Day!

(Places: 1st: 60m, 1st: 200m, 1st: 600m, 1st: Long jump, 2nd: High jump, and 3rd: Discus)

Pop Art With LunaPic!

Today with our Cybersmart teacher, we used LunaPic to create self Popart. First, we took a selfie of ourselves. Next, we went on to LunaPic and used filters to edit our photos. Then we took screen-shots of each of the 4 photos and inserted them onto a google drawings. We then embedded the Google drawings and posted it to our blog. It's really simple, easy and quick to make. Here is my final result

Beach Day Collage

Hello everyone!!! Term 3 holidays is finally over and we are back at school for the last term of the holidays! Over the holidays my family went to the beach in Gisborne, it was just my family (Mum, Dad, my brother and I) we also decided to take the (what Dad calls the 'Mutt racer') aka the dog! :D Anyways, at the beach we built things in the sand, went swimming, played in with the dog and played cricket. We added a little twist to the cricket and we played it facing the water, so that the fielder had to go and fetch the ball in the water. Anyways, we had a really fun day and I might even do a blog about my holiday writing. Mrs Bennett let us make a collage to go with our writing so here is mine!

Hope you enjoyed, see you next week with "Handy Hints with Hayley!'

Elecatcowpigyakfly

Today's 'Handy Hints with Hayley' features the 'Elecatcowpigyakfly' a mysterious creature I made. Recently Mrs Bennett went to a teacher workshop and she learnt how to make a mysterious creature using Google Drawings and using the explore tool, rotating shapes and cropping images. Using the skills she learnt she brought them back into the class and we made our own mysterious creatures...
Here is mine...

Brand Video Making

Recently with Mrs Torrie, our cyber smart teacher. We created a Brand Video. We could make the video about something we would advertise or make something just to put on the start of each blog post (which I will be doing). I decided to make mine for my blog, so every time I post a new blog post I will put on the video. I decided to call mine 'Handy Hints with Hayley' We used WeVideo to create our videos. I will be posting another blog explaining how to make the video (which is quite complicated)
Here is my video I created...

Woodwork Tech

This week we finished creating our stools with Peter Roberts (our woodwork teacher) Today we finished adding in some small cuts of wooden dowel and staining the wood. We had 9 weeks to start and finish the stool. Each stool stands at around 25.5cm deep by 30cm wide. It has been a big learning curve because each year we have a rotation and we learn something different and create something new so we learnt some different skills. So making a stool was a little more complicated then making a paper weight (what we made last year). The skills we practised or used to make our stool were... Sawing, sanding, staining the wood, glued, measured and drilling. My main highlights were challenging myself and getting to use the stool knowing that we made them. Overall, I had a great time working in the woodwork room and I am sure the other year 7's did too! Next term we are rotating to Cooking with Mrs Bennett.

Earths Structure

For the past couple of days our learning has been focused around Volcanoes, Mountains and the Earths structure. Learning about the earths structure helps with the understanding of how Volcanoes erupt and how mountains form and change shape over time. My reading group were the assigned the task of creating a diagram (on Google Drawings) with the earth's layers and a few sentences explaining a bit about the layers. Here is my diagram of the Earths layers...

Soundtrap

Last week our Cyber smart teacher Mrs Torrie introduced to us a new music website where we can create music. This website is called 'Soundtrap'. With our music we had to make the mood of the music like our picture. It was more more complicated than the past music websites I had used in the past. We had to choose our picture (I choose a cheetah) then we had to create the music on Soundtrap. After we had created our music we had to download the music into our drive and onto a slide with the image.
Even though I found this website a little hard to use I highly recommend it. If found that finding the music and sounds was hard however I shortly git the hang of it and I eventually came up with...

Persausive Writing

Recently in class we were given the task to write a Persuasive piece of writing. Our writing was about whether we think that 'Zoos are cruel and should be banned' and whether we agree with the statement or not. Here is my writing...

I strongly believe that Zoos are cruel and should be banned! Yes, Zoos are fun experiences. We get to learn about beautiful, exotic animals that most of us don’t often get to see. We also get to hang out with friends and family, but it isn’t like that for the animals. When animals are taken away from their natural environmental habitats to be taken to a Zoo, when they get released back in the wild, they can’t survive without rehabilitation.

My first reason, animals enclosures are very small, too small. Just think, it’s like being trapped in quarantine for the rest of your life. Zoos know that animal enclosures are too small and some Zoos have tried to make land bigger. For example places like the Werribee Zoo, in Australia have a part called the ‘Open Range’ which is a bigger 32km enclosure where African animals like Giraffes, Elephants and Zebras can roam. However, according to BBC, between 3,000 to 5,000 animals are killed in European zoos every year. Zoos in India and China couldn’t feed their animals over lockdown, meaning they had to be shot. Are all of these animals killed because there isn’t enough space for them, or not enough food?

My next reason is that Zoos aren’t safe for humans. Some of the animals can be unhappy, causing them to lash out, hurt or even kill people! For example, in 2016, a 3 year old climbed over a fence into an endangered Gorillas enclosure. In the end the workers had to shoot the Gorilla to save the kid, this wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t have Zoos. Some animal enclosures aren’t surrounded by very high fences either meaning people could climb into their enclosures or feed them food from the other side of the fence.

My third reason is that animals don’t get to live in their natural environments or with their natural herds. Animals might be safe from predators in the wild however they live unhappy and lonely lives in a zoo. Elephants are normally used to living in big herds, where in a Zoo there are only 1 or 2. When Elephants aren’t in their herds it makes them feel quite threatened and under stress. To help animals being put under stress, Zoos could minimize the amount of people allowed to enter the Zoo and raise the price of entering Zoos. Less people could help reduce the stress animals have because there isn’t as many people banging on glass, and the noise. Animals are also able to hunt and catch their own prey in the wild; zoo animals instead are given a carcass to chew on. In my opinion, Zoos should let animals like Lions, have live food in their enclosures.

Next, a lot of Zoos have a section where animals perform tricks. Seals for example are taught how to balance a ball on their noses, meaning that they could get hurt in the process. Animals are supposed to be in the wild, not doing tricks or trapped in a small enclosure. At the end of the day it doesn’t achieve anything for the animal, it only archives entertainment purposes and money for the Zoo.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that Zoos should be banned! Despite the fact that Zoos try their best to make the animals feel at home in captivity, I believe that animals

That is my writing, I hope you enjoyed and feedback is welcome anytime!

Hypertufa Pots

Last week with Mrs Allan we made Hypertufa pots. Basically it's a concrete pot with Perlite and Pete moss (we used Perlite and Pete moss to add texture and thickness)

Last week we made a cardboard mold. We covered it completely with a thick layer of tape. We also pierced a hole in the bottom of the mold and put blue tack though the hole to cover the mixture blocking the drainage hole. After we made the molds we made up the mixture using concrete, Perlite and Pete (and water).

After we mixed the concrete we added the mixture to our molds. However before we started adding in the mixture we added a plastic pot in the middle, on top of the blue tack.
(Sorry for the badly written steps or instructions.)

Anyway we added handfuls of the concrete mixture around the pot. Then we let the concrete set for a week. Today with Mrs Allan we took out the plastic pot and the cardboard. Our class now smell like a gardening center from using the Concrete!!!

Here is the Website we used to make them if you would like to try them too... 'Go gardening' I am going to be taking my plant home today to plant some succulents in.
(Once again sorry for the bad instructions)

Here is what our Hypertufa Pots look like...hypertufa pots

5 Reasons Why...

The other day in class, Mrs Bennett introduced a new type of writing, called '5 reasons why'. Basically, you write 5 things about why you think (for example) 'Spring is the best Season'.
We did this writing because recently we have been focusing on Persuasive Writing. We were trying to convince my readers that Matawai School is the best school.
Here is my writing....

The Funnest Tech Yet!!!!

Today our Tech teacher was away sick, meaning that we couldn't go to woodwork. So our Principal, Mr Knight took us for the 1 and a half hours that we would have been spending doing woodwork. We did Robotics and had to create a remote control robot that could move around and play a soccer game against the other robot. Our main focus was making a base for our robots and assembling the battery packs to wheels and gears and team work. We had 2 teams going against each other. Maranga, Duncan and Jaimee, against Rylee and I. We didn't quite finish our master pieces however we will be carrying on with them later. Here is the robot Rylee and I created ...

SLJ Badge!

Way, way back at the start of the year in the Summer holidays, I took part in the Summer Learning Journey (SLJ). Each day we where given a topic or three to write a blog post about. Over the Summer I managed to write 80-100 blog posts. Then back at school in Term 1 or 2, I was awarded A prize for the TOP Blogger. I won a pair of Headphones (which I was really happy about getting). Recently my Cybersmart teacher awarded me with a Blogging/Cybersmart Badge! Here is what it looks like...
YAY!!!!!!! :D
